Taste of Sicily

Taste of
Sicily

Jewel of the Mediterranean.

scroll down

Sicily is savory, sweet, salty, and spicy

Sicily is the gateway of the Mediterranean, a strategic hub between many surrounding countries including the Middle East, North Africa, Greece, France, and Spain. It is also a treasure chest of ingredients and riches. With each domination of Sicily, another layer of influence was added to create a unique tapestry. Sicily is a mix of flavors and cultures and experiences. Biking Sicily is a journey: real and raw, bold and beautiful. All memorable.

Day 2
Explore Palermo and Regaleali Winery Estate
We will begin the day with a guided walking tour of Palermo. This timing allows us to catch the lively Palermo markets where you will be entertained by fish and vegetable vendors calling and singing to their patrons in competing voices. We will then take a private shuttle to the Sicilain countryside, where we will stay at an inn located on the estate of Regaleali Winery — world-famous for its 90 different offerings (reds, whites, roses, sparkling, and dessert wines — as well as grappa). Siciclando and Regaleali share a wonderful relationship and we are treated as their personal guest during our stay...with multiple opportunities to taste their wonderful wines. Upon our arrival at the hotel we will enjoy a wine tasting and light lunch. Later in the afternoon, we will review the bike tour itinerary in more detail and enjoy a warm-up ride to get comfortable with your bicycle.

Day 3
Cycle to a Sicilian farm — organic and heirloom
Today we'll enjoy a nice ride to an agriturismo that produces their own olive oil and Sicilian heirloom grain. They will share their production and lead us in making our own individual pizzas, baked in a wood oven. The ride is beautiful with varied terrain back to Regaleali. After lunch you can decide to bike back or enjoy a van shuttle. The afternoon is yours to relax.

Day 4
Explore the Madonie Park and transfer to the Aeolian Islands
oday we'll leave the main island of Sicily for the Aeolian Islands, a chain of small islands located northeast of Sicily. We'll begin the morning with a bike ride near Sclafani Bagni and enjoy a light lunch along the way. Then we'll transfer by private bus to Milazzo (about a 2 1/2 hour ride). From Milazzo, we will take a ferry to the island of Lipari, where we'll stay in a comfortable 5 star hotel. Dinner is on your own tonight. The day begins with a series of climbs for the first 15 kilometers/9 miles through the enchanting Madonie Park. Once at the top the remaining ride is a wonderful descent and the view on this ride is spectacular; mountains, beautiful colors, and charming hilltop villages watching over our ride.

Day 8
Biking to Randazzo and to the Alcantara Gorge
After breakfast, a shuttle will take us to the starting point of the bike ride at Linguaglossa. This ride gently rolls along the north side of Mt. Etna volcano, which is amazing in the spring with the wild flowers covering the low sides of the volcano and spectacular in fall because of the rich brown colors of the vineyards. The scenery is accented with old ruins and lava stone walls outlining the fields and vineyards. We bike to the charming village of Randazzo, where we will have lunch at one of our favorite sandwich shops. After lunch enjoy a gentle downhill into the Alcantara Gorge — a beautiful end to the route and to our tour. A private shuttle will take us back to our hotel in Taormina. We will enjoy a final dinner together tonight.

Tour Hotels

Siciclando carefully chooses every aspect of a tour, including the accommodations.

Our choices are based on comfort and quality. We often choose hotels that are family-owned and operated because they provide a richer experience and because it is important to us to support the efforts of these individuals. We have developed relationships with many wonderful hotel operators. Here is a sample of the hotels on this tour.

Tour accommodations will be based on availability and the time of year. Once you have made your final payment for the tour, we will send you a confirmation letter that includes daily accommodations and contact information.

Feedback From Sicily

These guys have Sicilian cycling down to a science. All the people we dealt with at Siciclando were so kind and helpful. They gave us the GPS, which worked perfectly. The routes were very much backroads with minimal automobile traffic and the scenery was breathtaking for most of the ride. We didn't really follow dinner recommendations, and preferred to explore on our own. The hotels exceeded expectations — there were a couple in particular that really blew us away. I've done several of these types of self-guided tours in other countries. This was the best by far.

Loved the towns, scenery, variety of destinations & routes. Our welcome representative, Antonio answered a lot of questions which made our trip worry free. Truly a nicely run program. Riders had detailed information about cycling routes prior to starting. Good variety of places to stay & places to visit. Routes felt safe & were scenic. Length of routes met our ability.

Even for those of us in our group who aren't cyclists (and I'm one of them), the tour was an absolute pleasure - where the cycling was almost like a tool which enhanced everything else.

Bravo Siciclando! We were looking for a memorable family bike tour, something where we did not have to coordinate and manage the details. Siciclando made it happen from the planning to the tour itself. Our guide, Andrea, took great care of all of us (and our bikes).
