Among the trips we offer beyond Italy, one of the locations that we have vetted is along the banks of Lake Constance. Nestled at the crossroads of Germany, Switzerland, and Austria, this trip allows you to explore three countries in a single journey. From charming medieval towns to delicious local flavors, this trip is a perfect blend of bucolic pedals, local culture and cuisine, and breathtaking scenery. Here is a sample of what a trip flow could look like in this region, to paint a picture.
We like to start these tours from the island town of Lindau, perched on the eastern edge of Lake Constance. With cobbled streets and pastel buildings, Lindau feels like something out of a storybook. One of our favorite tour ingredients is to pedal inland from the lake towards a local brewery and a hops farm. The ride winds through rolling green hills dotted with family farms, and it's not uncommon to pass cows grazing or sheep ambling along. At the brewery, you'll learn about the areas brewing traditions and hop cultivation, with time to sample a few well-earned pints at the end.
Lindau is such a strategic starting point because while it is in Germany, it is right on the border with Austria. From here, we trace the lake's edge into Austria and on to Switzerland, weaving through alpine villages and quiet backroads. This stretch offers another great tour ingredient, the magnificent Abbey of St. Gall in nearby St. Gallen. This UNESCO World Heritage site houses one of the oldest libraries in the world, filled with ancient manuscripts and baroque beauty.
We like to end the tour by pedaling North again, towards Konstanz, returning to Germany along a particularly scenic stretch of shoreline. One of our favorite routes leads to a Swiss winery nestled in the hills above the lake. This region is known for its crisp white wines and sweeping views, and the afternoon spent here, glass in hand, is one of those moments that often stays with travelers long after the trip ends.
This region offers everything we look for in a cycling tour: safe, scenic routes with a rhythm that invites connection to the landscape, the people, and the small, meaningful experiences along the way. Whether it's the taste of freshly brewed beer, the quiet hush of a centuries-old library, or the late-day sun catching the lake just so, the Lake Constance tour is full of moments that invite you to slow down and savor.
