Taste of Sicily

Three perspectives in one tour.

Vineyards. Archipelagos and volcanoes. Lovely Taormina.

Begin in the energetic capital of Palermo and then onto the western vineyards of Regaleali winery. Discover the spirit of the Aeolian Islands to the northeast. Then enjoy the luxury of Taormina in the shadows of Mt Etna. This is our oldest and still our most popular bike tour of Italy. It is a favorite of ours as well as we introduce you to our home, our friends and family that have been a key part of this deep Sicilian experience. Cycle Sicily with Siciclando!

Come Explore The Taste of Sicily With Us!

Day 1 – Welcome to Sicily!

Arrive Palermo on your own and meet your Siciclando representative in the afternoon.  Palermo has so much to see – an exotic mixture of cultures displayed in beautiful churches, lively food markets, and amazing architecture including Gothic, Romanesque, Renaissance, and Baroque.  Dinner is on your own tonight.

Day 2 – Explore Palermo and Regaleali Winery Estate. (8.8 miles/14.7 km)

We will begin the day with a guided walking tour of Palermo.  This timing allows us to catch the lively Palermo markets where you will be entertained by fish and vegetable vendors calling and singing to their patrons in competing voices.  We will then take a private shuttle to the Sicilain countryside, where we will stay at an inn located on the estate of Regaleali Winery — world-famous for its 90 different offerings (reds, whites, roses, sparkling, and dessert wines – as well as grappa).  Siciclando and Regaleali share a wonderful relationship and we are treated as their personal guest during our stay…with multiple opportunities to taste their wonderful wines. Upon our arrival at the hotel we will enjoy a wine tasting and light lunch. Later in the afternoon, we will review the bike tour itinerary in more detail and enjoy a warm-up ride to get comfortable with your bicycle. Tonight, dinner will be included at the hotel.

Day 3 – Cycle to a Sicilian farm – organic and heirloom (33 miles/53 km)

Today we’ll enjoy a nice ride to an agriturismo that produces their own olive oil and Sicilian heirloom grain. They will share their production and lead us in making our own individual pizzas, baked in a wood oven. The ride is beautiful with varied terrain back to Regaleali. After lunch you can decide to bike back or enjoy a van shuttle. The afternoon is yours to relax. Dinner is included at Regaleali.

Day 4 – Explore the Madonie Park and transfer to the Aeolian Islands (21 miles/34 km)

Today we’ll leave the main island of Sicily for the Aeolian Islands, a chain of small islands located northeast of Sicily. We’ll begin the morning with a bike ride near Sclafani Bagni and enjoy a light lunch along the way. Then we’ll transfer by private bus to Milazzo (about a 2 ½ hour ride). From Milazzo, we will take a ferry to the island of Lipari, where we’ll stay in a comfortable 5 star hotel. Dinner is on your own tonight. The day begins with a series of climbs for the first 15 kilometers/9 miles through the enchanting Madonie Park.  Once at the top the remaining ride is a wonderful descent and the view on this ride is spectacular; mountains, beautiful colors, and charming  hilltop villages watching over our ride.

Day 5 – Lipari loop ride (16.3 miles/27.1 km)

Enjoy a loop ride on the island, giving us an opportunity to understand more
about the place and the archipelago. The views are outstanding and we expect that you will enjoy your bike tour of Lipari…and perhaps a granita (flavored ice) at our favorite place. This afternoon we are excited to offer a cooking class – a great way to learn and enjoy Sicilian-Aeolian Cooking and, then, dinner together.

Day 6 – Salina loop ride (13.7 miles/22.8 km)

We’ll take a ferry to the island of Salina where we’ll take an amazing loop ride on our bikes. The first stop is a small fishing village, Lingua, located along the Roman salt marsh. Here we will stop for a granita or coffee and perhaps a tour of the local museum. We’ll bike on, enjoying the breathtaking views, as we head to a private house to enjoy a glass of home made Malvasia wine and a light lunch. Dinner is on your own tonight.

Day 7 – Walking on the Vulcano’s volcano and back to the main island of Sicily

After breakfast, we’ll take the hydrofoil to Vulcano Island for a hike to the crater of the
volcano with our volcanologist. After lunch, we’ll transfer to Sicily to the beautiful town of Taormina.  Take a relaxing walk along the Corso Umberto with its classical music, cafés, pastry shops, art galleries, and clothing boutiques.  Visit the magnificent Greco-Roman amphitheatre – from here you will get a fantastic view of the Ionian Coast, Mt. Etna, and the city.  Dinner is on your own.

Day 8 – Biking to Randazzo and to the Alcantara Gorge (28.4 miles/47.3 km)

After breakfast, a shuttle will take us to the starting point of the bike ride at Linguaglossa. This ride gently rolls along the north side of Mt. Etna volcano, which is amazing in the spring with the wild flowers covering the low sides of the volcano and spectacular in fall because of the rich brown colors of the vineyards. The scenery is accented with old ruins and lava stone walls outlining the fields and vineyards. We bike to the charming village of Randazzo, where we will have lunch at one of our favorite sandwich shops. After lunch enjoy a gentle downhill into the Alcantara Gorge – a beautiful end to the route and to our tour. A private shuttle will take us back to our hotel in Taormina. We will enjoy a final dinner together tonight.

Day 9 – Departure Day or optional extension Hiking Mt. Etna

After breakfast, departure and end of our services. Ciao!
If you choose the Etna excursion you’ll be shuttled to the southeast side of the volcano for a walking tour.

Actual tour itinerary may vary slightly due to unforeseen circumstances.

“The Taste of Sicily tour was exactly as advertised. Thank you for a great Sicily experience! I felt that by the end of the trip I had a very deep appreciation of the history, geography, people, food and wine of the region. This trip is more than a cycle tour. The experiences provided by Siciclando immerse you in the rich and varied culture that is Sicily.”

Mickey and Lamya A

“There is no other way to see Sicily and glide through quiet towns with encouraging cheers from the men picking grapes in the passing fields and to finish each day with a delicious Italian meal.”

Michael G

“This was my second Siciclando trip and I loved it. I was afraid that I might be disappointed as I couldn’t imagine that the Taste of Sicily could compete with last year’s Puglia trip but it did!!! Both trips were amazing and I look forward to another Siciclando trip in the near future.”

Fern D

“Loved everything! Great value, enjoyed the guides, nice size group, well-chosen restaurants, loved exploring all the interesting towns and villages, well-chosen accommodations.

Going with Siciclando is like going with friends!”

Siciclando carefully chooses every aspect of a tour, including the accommodations.

Our choices are based on comfort and quality. We often choose hotels that are family-owned and operated because they provide a richer experience and because it is important to us to support the efforts of these individuals. We have developed relationships with many wonderful hotel operators. Here is a sample of the hotels on this tour.

Tour accommodations will be based on availability and the time of year. Once you have made your final payment for the tour, we will send you a confirmation letter that includes daily accommodations and contact information.
