Day 1: Arrive in Turin!
Welcome to the royal town of Italy. This was the heart of the Savoy’s family kingdom in Italy. Turin is a hub of Europe between London, Paris, Barcelona, Munich, even along the eastern route to Jerusalem. Turin also became the birthplace of the unification of Italy, which took place over years in mid-1800’s and became final in 1861. We will gather in the afternoon at our hotel for a welcome and a glass of wine (the first of several during our tour). We will enjoy dinner together at one of our favorite restaurants.
Breakfast and dinner included.
Day 2: Cycle the land of the Savoys
Today we will be introduced to our bikes with a lovely ride to Venaria Palace, one of the Savoy’s palaces near Turin. In the afternoon we will explore Turin on a guided walking tour. Enjoy a walk along the covered porticos (that stretch along 10 miles) and among charming open plazas. Along the way we will stop at one of our favorite cafes for a chance to experience a coffee, pastry, or bicerin (a chocolate coffee concoction of Turin) in one of Turin’s grand bars.
Breakfast included today.
Day 3: Into the Piemonte countryside (30 miles/48 km)
We leave Turin for a brief shuttle ride to visit the Savoy family’s hunting lodge built in the 1700’s. It is like a small Versailles, a beautiful place. From here we bike along fields and forests, through villages and on a nice bike path that was once a railway, and we’ll arrive in Villafranca. Relax during lunch in a special place. We will shuttle to our hotel in Saluzzo, a hotel converted from a monastery, beautiful restored and opened in 2010. The town of Saluzzo is charming with cobblestone streets and beautiful architecture…an enchanting stay. Together we will enjoy a dinner at a special restaurant. Bring your appetite! Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included.
Day 4: Strafarrda Abbey and Saluzzo (28 miles/45 km)
Bike Piemonte’s rich countryside carpeted with orchards: apple, pear, and kiwi. We find our way to the lovely Abbey of Stafarrda founded in 1135 where we will explore the grounds and the church. There is an on-site cafe with good food. We will transfer back to the town of Saluzzo where you can enjoy a walk on your own of the village. Together we will enjoy a dinner at a special restaurant. Bring your appetite! Breakfast and dinner included.
Day 5: Biking chestnut forests, plus truffles (22 miles/37 km)
We say goodbye to Saluzzo and transfer to the forest where we will experience a truffle hunt with our friend Luca and his amazing dogs, Willie or Maya. It is a truly fun experience to watch them together. Then we will begin our bike ride through the forests of Piemonte on the way to our hotel, close to Moncalvo. The bike ride is beautiful with a good amount of up and down terrain. The route takes us through chestnut forests and tiny villages that greet us with the sound of church bells along the way. We will enjoy a picnic lunch. Breakfast and picnic lunch and dinner are included today.
Day 6: A Medieval Retreat (25 miles/41 km)
Today we will cycle a nice bike loop through small medieval villages and enchanting forests. You will pass through Moncalvo which was a favorite retreat of Italy’s first king, Vittorio Emanuele II – a small town filled with churches, public squares, good food and wine. Breakfast is included.
Day 7: Bike Barolo wine country (19 miles/31 km)
This morning we will transfer to Alba and arrive in the land of nebbiolo vineyards that produce the famous Barolo wine. The views are stunning and the wine is fabulous! We will stop in the town of Barolo where we will learn about the nebbiolo grape and the different wines produced. We will also gain an understanding of how the different soils impact the flavor of the wine. A fun way to experience the different wine productions of the area. You will have time to explore this charming village and perhaps taste risotto made with the Barolo wine or the brasato (beef baked in Barolo). We will transfer to our hotel in Monforte d’Alba (or bike ride). Relax at our beautiful hotel. Breakfast is included today.
Day 8: Vineyards and Hazelnut Groves (25 miles/41 km)
